In Memory of
Helen Louise Sewell (Pugh)
June 11, 1934 - May 18, 2010

A loving mother, wife and friend
Helen passed away early morning of May 18, 2010 in Spokane, WA. Helen was born on June 11, 1934 in Baudette, MN and the family moved to Spokane when she was seven. She graduated from Rogers HS in 1952 then attended Whitworth College and the Deaconess School of Nursing, graduating in 1955. She married Robert Sewell at the Hillyard Baptist Church on September 15, 1956. She is survived by husband of 54 years Robert, son Donald and wife Kathy (Rigsby), grandson Tyler (8), daughter Mary Ann Driftmeyer and husband Todd, all of Spokane. A registered nurse, Helen was our 'Florence Nightingale' and well-known for her hard-work, compassion and dedication in emergency rooms and surgery centers at Deaconess, Sacred Heart, Rockwood Clinic, Holy Family Hospital as well as numerous nursing homes and extended-care facilities around the area. She also volunteered as an RN for many years at the House of Charity free clinic in downtown Spokane. Helen made her own wedding dress and taught sewing classes at the YWCA. She later made numerous baton-twirling uniforms and bridesmaid dresses for daughter Mary Ann. Helen was President of the Washington Water Power Women's Auxiliary as well as a Campfire leader for many years. She received a PHT Degree (Putting Husband thru School) from the University of Idaho. Helen enjoyed gardening and landscaping, teddy bears, boat camping at area lakes but especially Priest Lake where she and Robert spent their honeymoon. While Helen could help and fix almost anything for everybody, she lost a long and undeserving 10+ year battle with dementia and Alzheimer's. She has now rejoined and is rejoicing with family and friends preceding her in death: her parents Edith and Harry and Bill, her brothers Brian and Harold, Aunt Hazel and Aunt Dorothy just to name a few. The Memorial Service was held Monday May 24, 2010 at Country Homes Christian Church in North Spokane. In lieu of flowers, memorials were made to Horizon Hospice and the Spokane Humane Society.
